Naknek resident Dale Charles Preston, 70, died Feb. 12, 2005, at Providence Extended Care Center in Anchorage.

No local service is planned. A memorial service will be held in Naknek and his cremated remains scattered in the Naknek area.

Mr. Preston was born Dale Charles Pigott on Dec. 3, 1934, in Comox, British Columbia, Canada. He saw active service in Korea with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957.

A resident of Alaska since 1964, Mr. Preston worked as a tour bus driver and logging truck driver in the 1960s and 1970s. He became a carpenter and in the early 1980s built King Salmon Lodge in King Salmon. He had lived in Fairbanks, Haines and Anchorage.

"Throughout his life, Dale's great passion was painting," his family wrote. "He was also an avid angler who enjoyed fishing for rainbow trout, which he admired for their color and taste, and king salmon.

"Dale was an artist who painted the Alaska landscape, most recently in the Bristol Bay area. He was particularly proud of his paintings 'Old Diver' and 'Eagle Country,' as well as his illustrations for the two children's books 'Out on the Tundra' and 'Down by the River,' written by Sara Feriante Donkersloot. He enjoyed meeting guests who came to King Salmon Lodge. He made many friends in the local community and spent many holiday occasions with John, Laurie, Jay and Diane King of Naknek."
